Part 2
1 Peter
2:9
I.
Introduction.
A. We must understand as Christians we are priest, part of the Royal Priesthood of Christ.
1. The goals of this lesson is to :
a) Educate Christians concerning their service as priest.
b) Motivate you to embrace your duty as a priest and glorified God in your service as priest of the Most High God.
B. Last week we discussed the history of priest.
1. I used the historical time periods as they relate to our relationship with God.
a) Patriarch period.
b) Moses period.
c) Christian period.
C. Today I will examine closer the duties of the Christian as a priest.
1. 1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;
II.
Our High Priest
Jesus.
A. When the Law Changes the priesthood has to change.
1. Hebrews 7:12 For the priesthood being changed, of necessity there is also a change of the law.
B. Only God can establish who is high priest.
1. Hebrews 5:4-6 And no man takes this honor to himself, but he who is called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him: "You are My Son, Today I have begotten You." As He also says in another place: "You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek";
2. Abraham was blessed by Melchizedek and the greater blesses the lesser.
a) Heb 7:1 ¶ For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him,
b) Heb 7:7 Now beyond all contradiction the lesser is blessed by the better.
3. The Law of Moses was weak and there was a need to replace it with something better.
a) (Hebrews 7:18) For on the one hand there is an annulling of the former commandment because of its weakness and unprofitableness.
C. Jesus’ priesthood is based on the priesthood of Melchizedek and never ends.
1. Hebrews 5:6 As He also says in another place: "You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek";
2. Hebrews 7:3 without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest continually.
3. Hebrews 8:1 Now [this is] the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens,
4. He offers gifts for our sins.
a) Hebrews 8:1-4 Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, a Minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle which the Lord erected, and not man. For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices. Therefore it is necessary that this One also have something to offer. For if He were on earth, He would not be a priest, since there are priests who offer the gifts according to the law;
D. With the New law the opportunity for a covenant between God and all men came.
Hebrews 7:22 by so much more Jesus has become a surety of a better covenant.
1. The covenant has membership requirements.
2. With obedience to the requirements Jesus starts serving as your High priest.
3. With obedience you become a priest.
III. Priesthood of Christians. 1 Peter 2:9
A. He choose us first, we didn’t choose Him.
Ephesians 1:4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love,
2 Thessaloians 2:13 But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth.
1. Not because we are great or mighty.
2. Because we need Him.
3. We needed mercy.
a) 1 Peter 2:10…who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.
4. Certain laws in respect to the qualifications of priests are given.
a) Believe, Confess, Baptism and confess our sins as commit them.
B. As Priest we are to proclaim the praises of God.
1. To the world as we testify of the Gospel to our neighbors, family and co-workers.
2. As we worship.
C. As Priest we are to offer up spiritual sacrifices.
1. 1 Peter 2:5 you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
2. What are spiritual sacrifices?
a) Sacrifice our old self.
b) Sacrifice time.
c) Sacrifice our love of the world.
d) Sacrifice our resources.
